Dr. Stephen Chapman is an Associate Professor in the department of Operations and Supply Chain Management at NC State University. He has extensive teaching and research experience in Production and Operations Management from a number of schools in addition to NC State including the Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the Kenan Flagler School of Business at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and the College of Business Administration at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Chapman’s research in the past has focused on lean manufacturing systems. Currently his research focus has shifted to two main directions. One deals with strategic decision making in organizations and the other explores the evolution of supply chain management. He became interested in the area of strategic decision making during one of his many consulting assignments. Dr. Chapman has worked on consulting projects with a number of international organizations including Ford Motor Company, Volvo-GM Heavy Trucks, Douglas Medical Companies, Guilford Mills, Allied Signal, ABB and ElectriCities of North Carolina.

Dr. Chapman’s research has been published in acclaimed journals such as Decision Sciences, The International Journal of Production and Operations Management, Production and Inventory Management, International Journal of Production Research, The Journal of Manufacturing Systems and Operations Management Review. He has been selected to speak in a number of professional conferences and has co-authored two books in the area of Materials and Supply Chain Management including Introduction to Materials Management (Prentice-Hall, 2001) and Introduction to Materials Management Casebook (Prentice-Hall, 2001). His publications also include a manufacturing and production control simulation called ITEC.

Dr. Chapman’s work reflects a notable combination of scholastic contributions as well as professional activities. He currently serves on the editorial review board of the Production and Inventory Management journal and has served on the editorial review board of the Journal of Operations Management in the past. Dr. Chapman has been on the committee that overseas the CPIM certification program offered by APICS for 14 years. He was the chair of the committee that developed the APICS professional certification program in the Basics of Supply Chain Management.

Dr. Chapman stresses a healthy blend of theory and application in his graduate supply chain management courses at NC State. In his business process course for MBA students concentrating in supply chain management, he emphasizes the value of adopting a cross-functional process view within an organization and across supply chains. The course, with its project component, is designed to be application oriented. Students in all his courses are encouraged to look at the practical implications of concepts as he weaves in examples derived from his considerable industry experience.

Prior to starting on his doctorate, Dr. Chapman worked as a senior consultant at Deloitte, Haskins and Sells (now Deloitte Consulting) where he helped companies with production and manufacturing systems implementation. He was introduced to various aspects of operations including purchasing, receiving, warehousing, inventory control and production as a materials manager at Hoover-NSK Bearing Company. He has also worked in a supervisory role in the area of inventory database management at the Sycor division of Northern Telecom Systems Corporation (now Nortel). Dr. Chapman is a three time graduate of the University of Michigan earning an MBA in 1982, a Masters in educational psychology and Bachelors in physics and mathematics. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1986.
