Dr. Cecil Bozarth

Dr. Cecil Bozarth is an Associate Professor of Business Administration in the Supply Chain Management department at NC State University. His research focuses on the strategic match between the operations and supply chain needs of organizations and their MIS investments. This area of research is particularly pertinent given the emergence of new technologies and the substantial investments made by a growing number of companies on information systems. According to Dr. Bozarth, assessing whether or not these information systems are aligned with the specific business needs of the organization is a fundamental step in the decision process that companies often tend to ignore
.
Professor Bozarth became interested in the business issues driving the organizational investments in information technology while he was at IBM. Between 1984-1988, Dr. Bozarth worked with IBM as a systems engineer helping companies select hardware and software solutions to their business problems. He earned a Master of Science in Decision Sciences from Georgia State University while he was at IBM and then went on to get a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a specialization in Operations Management from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Professor Bozarth is trying to reflect this growing emphasis on information visibility and flow across the supply chain in his graduate course for supply chain management students at NC State. He has divided the course into three parts, the first focusing on the classic logic of production and control systems, the second emphasizing the supply chain perspective and the third revolving around information systems. He encourages his students to look at every tool and technique covered in the class from the perspective of the entire supply chain rather than just the firm.

Dr. Bozarth’s research has been published in The Journal of Operations Management, Production and Inventory Management Journal, Decision Sciences and The International Journal of Operations and Production Management. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Operations Management and serves on the editorial review boards of the Production and Operations Management Journal and Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education. He is also a past chair of the Operations Management Division of the Academy of Management. Professor Bozarth has been invited to speak in a number of professional meetings and his consulting experience includes educational consulting projects with Bayer Pharmaceuticals and IBM and traditional consulting projects with GKN, Daimler Benz and Ford Motor Company.

Dr. Bozarth has been recognized for his teaching as well as professional contributions. He was named by APICS as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the area of Supply Chain Management. In 2002, he was awarded the NC State University College of Management teaching award. Dr. Bozarth received his Bachelor of Management Sciences from the University of Georgia in 1984. Upcoming activities include a book, co-authored with Dr. Robert Handfield, that is an introduction to operations and supply chain topics and a sabbatical at the Darden school of Business at the University of Virginia in the spring during which he will collaborate with faculty there to develop a series of case studies specifically addressing how MIS investments match up against supply chain activities.
